One of the main goals of Str8way Ministries is to provide opportunities to the communities and individuals with whom we have relationship. Many times, as Americans, and also as Christians that want to help, we come in and start handing out gifts and money. Although our hearts are often in the right place, we have learned in our time down here that we actually begin to do a disservice to those we want to help because they often become expectant of and dependent on the handouts they receive. Because of this, we are committed to working with individuals who are motivated to work within and overcome their circumstances.
One of the teens from Masaya that we have worked with over the past seven years is now living in Diriamba. She has a husband and a year and a half old daughter. We were recently visiting her at her home and she was telling us how tight money was. She told us that there was barely enough money for food, let alone clothing and shoes.
We went home and discussed this and felt like God laid on our hearts to offer her a job cleaning our house three times a week for a couple hours. Can we do it ourselves? Absolutely, but by not just handing her money, we are offering her the opportunity to feel as though she is working to contribute to her family. Having decided this, we went back to visit again, and she asked us if maybe we had some work that she could do. God is so amazing the way he confirms His will! Angela has been coming for the past couple of weeks, and along with having a clean house, we have had several opportunities share how God sees and provides for every need we have.
