This past Monday we went and bought food from the open air market with Juanita as our guide. We have been excited to start cooking for ourselves, and this was the starting point. Our first dinner was made on Tuesday which was planned as a typical Nicaraguan chicken and rice dinner. Our kitchen consists of a tabletop gas stove which seemed to only have a high setting (or so we thought). The cooking of the chicken and vegetables was somewhat rapid leading to charred vegetables. The first time we tried cooking the rice it was somewhat... crunchy. So, we added water, which made the final product resemble something like waterlogged Japanese sticky rice. In an attempt to make it edible we added Pimienta Blanca Molida (ground white pepper). Forever in our minds, Pimienta Blanca Molida will be linked with the taste of barnyard. Here is a video for you to enjoy. (Sorry for some of the dark frames as this was filmed at night.)
